Types of Housing in Higher Education

There are a few different types of housing in Higher Education.

Living in a dorm is almost a rite of passage into adult life. Students look forward to this type of freedom. There are different types with some having a community bath or share with two or four other students. Students have access to the internet, laundry, and cable television. Typically, dining plans allow students to go to any hall or food court on campus to eat. Students will look at the dining options and choose the best one that fits for their lifestyle. Make sure to check out your institutions housing options!

Off Campus Housing

Students have the opportunity to live in an apartment or house off campus. Some institutions require students to live on campus for at least the first year.  Before signing any lease or agreement, please check to make sure your institution does not have that requirement.

Students have the opportunity to rush a sorority or a fraternity. In regard to housing, every institution is different. Some require new members to move in the first year, while others the second year. So, it is important to see the policies and procedures for that. Also, please check what fees will be assessed for breaking contracts. However, some think that what a student can gain from being in a fraternity or sorority will far outweigh the fees

Scholarship Halls and other Univesity Housing

Some universities offer one and two bedroom apartments for students that are still on campus. Other institutions have scholarship halls which are more affordable than typical residence halls and housing off campus. In these halls, students cook and clean for their hall, which is a bit different than the typical residence hall.
